Blue Amazon
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea establishes that all economic assets existing on the seabed and in the marine subsoil, along a coastal strip 200 nautical miles wide, the so called Exclusive Economic Zone (ZEE), constitute exclusive property of the coastal State.
In some cases, the Continental Shelf (CS) exceeds this distance, and may extend the economic property of th State up to 350 nautical miles. In Brazil, these areas added together (ZEE plus the CS) characterize the immense Blue Amazon.
Measuring nearly 4.5 million km², the Blue Amazon adds to the Country an area equivalent of more than 50% of its territorial extension.
The Blue Amazon is vital for Brazil. More than 95% of Brazilian foreign trade (imports and exports) is carried by sea. From the blue Amazon, more than 80% of the national oil production is extracted. Fishing, coastwise shipping, maritime tourism, nautical sports, and, in the future, the exploration of energy and extraction of minerals from the seabed are other potentialities of the Blue Amazon.
With the imminence of the expansion of Brazilian territory in the Atlantic Ocean, we should concern ourselves with the exploration and the preservation of this immense patrimony.
We should think about how to protect it, for, to the holder of the riches, always falls the onus of protection.
Hence the importance of the Brazilian Maritime Power.
Hence the importance of the Brazilian Navy.
